CELEBRATING HERITAGE: Indigenous Dancers Look to the Future
Kenneth Shirley, from Phoenix, Arizona, has taken traditional indigenous dance usually seen at Powwows onto the international stage. Having performed at Powwows since he was 2 years old, empowered by heritage and encouraged by his family, Shirley took his love for his culture and started Indigenous Enterprise. In the short few years since they started, Indigenous Enterprise, a troupe of Indigenous dancers representing different tribes, have been showcased on NBC’s “World of Dance”, collaborated with The Black-Eyed Peas’ Taboo, performed at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, written about in both The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, and in January 2020, were invited to perform for President Joe Biden’s virtual inauguration. This is just a part of his story.
