Scott Johnson, Sola 800 Help Capture Big Animals, Big Passions

on
The ocean and its inhabitants have fascinated me since childhood.  Compelling desires to explore the underwater world, glimpse animals up-close and then share the experiences with others continue to fuel my passions for photography and photojournalism.  I am honored to blow bubbles with the smallest anemone fish to largest whales, but big animals hold an extra special place in my heart. Big animal photography is among the most demanding, rewarding and humbling aspects of my work.  Billfish (marlin, sailfish, swordfish, spearfish), marine mammals (such as dolphin, dugongs, manatee, sea otters, sea lions, seals, walruses and whales), marine reptiles (like alligators, crocodiles, sea snakes/kraits and turtles), ocean sunfish, rays and sharks are the marine King Kongs I seek.  Finding them is only part of the challenge.  Approaching these special creatures without causing them to flee or putting either of us at risk can be even tougher.  Their sheer size, speed and/or defensive arsenal can further complicate the task of photographing them. My Light & Motion Sola Photo 800 lights are invaluable tools whenever I have the opportunity to lock focus on one of these impressive subjects.  The density of clean water can be eight times denser than air.  Shooting through water laced with all kinds of particulate matter in tough conditions that may include strong currents, powerful surges, barnacle-laced rocks, thermoclines and much more makes most land photography seem tame by comparison.  The special Sola red light settings help my Nikon D800 camera bodies focus in the dim light and yet do not scare the animals the way bright whites typically do.  Bottom line, the Sola Photo lights are perfect for my work.  They are compact, powerful, dependable, durable, easy to maintain and simple to use. Scott and Lauren are photojournalists who specialize in marine, wildlife, travel subjects.  Their passion to observe animals in their natural habitats and explore diverse cultures has carried them on adventures around the globe.  Check out this link for some more of his work: (http://www.divephotoguide.com/underwater-photography-travel/article/fisheyes-perspective-isalnd-dancer-ii-johnson/)
